Environment

For every tree we fell, we plant one in its place.

For less than zero footprint.

Only materials from renewable resources Smoke exclusively uses precision-machined plywood. We use no steel, no PVC (aka plastic).

Low-energy production By precision machining plywood, it can be joined without the usual connectors: Smoke furniture uses no PVC connectors, No steel screws. This modern take on an all-wooden piece means we use much less energy in production (up to 80% lower than a comparably sized table from a traditional retailer*). Every table is cut exclusively from Finnish FSC-birch plywood.

One-Step digital manufacturing, minimising transport emissions Our one-stop manufacturing process allows the same factory that owns the forest and makes the plywood to cut the pieces on the spot, eliminating transport between suppliers. Less carbon emissions through transport means less embodied energy.

1-for-1 reforestation for zero impact wood For every birch that we fell,  we replant one tree to directly take it's place, making the tree-loss through our activities zero. Additionally, we guarantee FSC-certified, sustainably forested wood. We call this being the world's first forest-neutral company, planting 1 tree for every 1 we fell. 1-for-1  leaves no traces.

Carbon Negative This tree-planting also has the effect of pulling CO2 out of the air (sequestration). Because of our low emissions in the first place, this sequestration binds more CO2 than we produce, making us not just carbon neutral but net carbon negative. **

End-Of-Life At the end of the products' life, plywood products can be burned for energy. The carbon emitted has already been recaptured by the 1-for-1 reforestation, making this process carbon-net-neutral.

Smoke's furniture is designed to leave less than zero footprint.

CO2 footprint

* In comparison with a commercially available table with the dimensions 120cm*74cm*74cm: 11.5kg veneered particleboard, 0.5kg Polyester connectors, 10.5kg Virgin/Recycled steel for legs, 4.5kg aluminium feet.

** Embodied energy (including production and transport) of a compact table is 8.1 kgCO2e, and 11.7kgCO2 is emitted in burning the table end-of-life. A replaced birch tree sequesters (draws from the atmosphere) 10.5kgCO2e from the air every year, and lives 10 years on average until its harvest, binding 105kgCO2e, resulting in -77.1kgCO2e for every table. The difference stems from plywood-milling being a relatively low-energy process (compared to steel manufacturing for example), and also less than a birch tree is needed to make plywood for one compact table.
